Off the top of my mind, BMW, Ram Trucks, Ford Australia, Toyota (J70 Land Cruiser) and Volvo are the only mainstream car manufacturers that still make passenger cars with straight-six engines. There was a time almost every car manufacturer produced some kind of straight-six engine, but the more compact design of V6 engines meant that manufacturers could create more cabin space while having the same performance of a straight-six motor. Although the sound of V6s and straight-sixes are very similar, I personally find that the sound of a straight-six is slightly more aggressive. Straight-six motors are also very smooth in feel, and they do tend to provide plenty of torque too. It’s a shame not many manufacturers make them anymore, but that doesn’t mean they’re forgotten. Rumour has it that Mercedes Benz will be making one very soon, and thanks to YouTube, you can listen to one whenever you feel like it. Here are a few cool straight-six engine notes. Enjoy!
