Videos for the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 are fast appearing, and Road & Track have wasted no time pitting it against the latest four-seat sports car benchmark - the Nissan GT-R. Enjoy the ZL1's V8 roar! It’s been 100 years since Chevrolet was founded, and they’re celebrating with this - the 2012 Corvette Centennial Edition. The Centennial Edition package will be available in all Corvette models, and comes in a black Carbon Flash Metallic paint, satin-black graphics, red brake callipers, and unique lightweight black wheels made from cast-spun aluminium. Other unique features are graphic logos on the B-pillars, centre caps of the wheels, and centre of the steering wheel with an image Louis Chevrolet – founder of the company. Interior features include the same black theme as the exterior, with an Ebony leather-wrapped instrument panel, complimented by red stitching on the door panel, steering wheel, seats, console and shifter. The seat headrests come with a centennial logo as well, while the steering wheel, armrest and shifter are wrapped around in suede. For the longest of times, Ford pretty much had the market of 500hp-plus muscle cars all to itself with the Shelby GT500 – no more. Chevrolet has unleashed its latest weapon aimed squarely at conquering Ford in the muscle car game, and it’s called the Camaro ZL1. Unveiled at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show, many car geeks were expecting the next high-performing Camaro to be named Z28, as a way of paying tribute to previous high-performing Camaros. The ZL1 comes equipped with the same engine found in the Cadillac CTS-V, an aluminium 6.2 litre supercharged V8 producing 550hp and 550 lb ft of torque, matching the Shelby in terms of power but exceeding it in torque. Those American ponies are then channelled through a six-speed Tremec TR6060 manual transmission, and though Chevrolet haven’t given any acceleration or speed figures, the ZL1 should be good for a 0-60mph time in the mid 4 sec range and a quarter-mile time in the low 12s or high 11s. Hennessey Performance have gotten their hands on the all new Chevy Camaro SS, and have wasted no time in trying to make it angrier. A supercharger, a freer breathing exhaust, sports air intake, upgraded ECU, and drag radial tires make up their HPE550 package. As the number suggests, the Camaro packs north of 550 hp, enabling it to make a sub 12 sec run to the quarter mile. As the 1st of June approaches, many car enthusiasts were worried that GM would axe the Chevrolet Corvette as part of its restructuring plans, worried it would suffer the same impending doom of Chrysler's Dodge Viper. The Chevrolet Camaro is back and is hungry to show Ford's Mustang and Dodge's Challenger a thing or two of what a modern muscle car should be all about. Edmunds' Inside Line was quick to put the all new Chevy Camaro SS against the Mustang GT and Challenger R/T. The war of the Muscle cars is definitively on. |
